Founded in South Africa in 2007, Praekelt.org builds mobile technologies to improve the wellbeing of people in low and middle income countries. We work with governments, international NGOs, foundations and social enterprises to create and deliver essential information and vital services.
We are looking for a devops engineer with experience in building open source software to help us develop tools and investigate new technology to improve the speed of feedback loops around services reliability. You’ll be exposed to unique challenges assisting with the maintenance and development of our Linux server fleet around Africa and EC2, and have the opportunity to contribute to internal and external open source projects. We believe in choosing the right tools for the job, and support creativity in solving problems.
Design and implement distributed infrastructure to support our services
Research, experiment with, and assess new technologies to improve our services
Help troubleshoot production problems including errors and performance issues
Automate processes to streamline the deployment of infrastructure and applications
Ensure that our services are running optimally by maintaining and enhancing our monitoring and observability tools
Develop and contribute to open-source software
Respond to critical errors and security issues as soon as possible
Collaborate across teams to expose new opportunities to improve our products
We are interested in candidates with experience in some or all of these topics:
Basic Linux systems administration.
Understanding of networking fundamentals and common protocols such as HTTP and DNS.
Database administration and maintenance -- especially PostgreSQL.
Cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services.
Configuration management tools such as Puppet, Chef, or equivalent.
Development tools and revision control. Experience with at least one of Python, Elixir, or Go.
Container orchestration systems such as Kubernetes or Mesosphere DC/OS.
Distributed systems and high availability techniques.
