  • Has established the largest maternal health programme in {insert correct scale}
  • Runs the world’s largest COVID awareness WhatsApp chatbot, reaching {X million users}
  • Has projects which span topics such as HIV and TB management, global smoking cessation, diabetes, and gender-based violence (GBV).
  • Has also expanded to support health workers in managing the health burden is focussed on utilising the vast presence of mobile devices even in low-income demographics

We’re looking for a passionate, committed Senior Content Designer to join a multidisciplinary team of driven problem solvers who design solutions to complex developing world problems using mobile technology.

In this role, you will be responsible for designing content to meet user needs in a way that is easy for the user to understand and interact with. You will start from the discovery phase, working closely with Service Designers and other team members to understand user needs and develop new ideas for impactful services. Focused on the end-to-end user journey, you will work with colleagues and clients to ensure appropriate content is shown to a user in the right place and the best format.

Key Focus Areas:

  • User-centered content design: This consists of analysing user needs to produce content that displays the answer in a way that the user best consumes. In some cases, this won’t involve writing or editing text content. The content solution that best matches the user’s needs might be video, images, or infographics. 
  • Content sourcing and production: Consider all needs to determine how content has to be sourced and developed, how it is delivered to our users and what steps need to be taken to reach the desired result.
  • Content and communications ownership: Ensures all project communications and content stay true to the brand voice.  


  • Collaborate with service designers and other team members to develop and facilitate research with users and other stakeholders that drive content insights.
  • Work with service designers to define user needs and use these research-based insights to develop new products and content or improve existing services' content and user experience.
  • Own the content strategy deliverables on various local and global challenges, including developing key themes, messages, topics, voice, style, and brand guidelines.
  • Work with M&E and service designers to ensure key messages are aligned with crucial project outputs, outcomes, and desired impact.
  • Conduct content inventories, audits, and gap analysis to inform the programme design.  
  • Collaborate with services designers and strategic leads to optimise the user experience and develop user journeys, flows, wireframes, and screen designs.
  • Craft, edit, proofread, and fact-check content. This will require checking that all content formats meet the desired standard and are delivered using the correct persona and style.
  • Use the appropriate measurement tools to learn about the performance and impact of the content, share the learnings with clients and colleagues and improve the product using these insights. 
  • Understand the objectives of clients and partners so that you can effectively gauge the efficacy of content.

Desired skills and experience:

  • You have a degree or qualification in English, Digital Media, Journalism, Linguistics, Marketing, Design, or any other relevant fields. 
  • You have 3 - 5 years of industry experience in a relevant setting (Not-for-profit/development, media, consulting, marketing, design, etc.) 
  • You are experienced in content writing and have a deep understanding of 'medical' writing 
  • You have a background in behaviour modification theory/psychology
  • You have experience with literature reviews and academic writing/studies 
  • You have experience with text-based only digital (phone) platforms
  • You are experienced in working with content management systems and familiar with working on Content Management Platforms like WordPress, Drupal, or equivalent social media tools.
  • You have strong copywriting and editorial writing skills, as well as editing skills.
  • You are familiar with and have past experiences with creating and managing content across different content formats, especially digital formats. 
  • You are great at understanding how to turn user needs into the correct form of communication, whether video, image, or text. 
  • You’re a systems thinker; you love solving big, hairy problems and can design content for complex systems and user experiences.
  • You’re a confident and flexible member of interdisciplinary teams where harmonious collaboration is imperative.
  • You’re a passionate technophile; You are always in the know about the latest trends, technologies, and platforms.
  • You know what it takes to design and deliver inclusive and sustainable projects at pan-African or global scale.
  • You believe improvement relies on active measurement and strive to build feedback loops into everything you do. 
  • You know how to communicate your ideas; you have excellent written English and oral presentation skills.
  • You thrive in an unstructured, unsupervised environment and are self-motivated to meet deadlines.
